I'm Getting a Little Freaked Out Here

Who would ever guess that it could be so hard to find a nice home to rent when you have several states to choose from.  I have spent hours upon hours upon hours these past few days sitting in front of my laptop trying to find something.  Perhaps it's my own fault that I can't find anything.  I have standards.

Many homes look pretty nice but the rent is priced way beyond what someone not related to Bill Gates can afford.  I mean honestly ... $6,500 a month to rent a 3-bedroom house?!?!?  Other homes are priced right but they look like condemned buildings, or they are uglier than the ugliest thing you can think of.

I have found a few homes (very few) that look like real possibilities.  I've emailed the agents & have received no response.  I've then called the agents, left a message, & have received no response.  What is it with these people?!?!? Are they wanting to rent their homes or not?!?!?  If the homes are already rented, can't they be bothered to take them off their websites & respond to let me know they are no longer available?

I have searched various locales in Wisconsin, Ohio, Indiana, western Maryland, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, New York, & Connecticut.  I've even searched in Tennessee which as you no doubt may be aware is not known for its snowfall accumulation.  I've even searched areas we previously determined impractical ... like Montana.  With the exception of one lone possibility where we used to live before in Crossville, Tennessee, there's nothing.  I will admit that this one home is lovely from what I can see of it online, & I know the area well so I know it's a good area, but the idea was to find a place farther north, not farther south   : (

Things are getting down to the wire here. We received the offer I mentioned last Saturday, we countered it on Sunday, & the buyers now have until 6:00 p.m. this evening to either accept it, counter it back, or walk away. Meanwhile our agent called yesterday to ask if someone could come here at 5 o'clock this afternoon to have a look around.  They are aware that there is an offer already but they want to be first in line if it falls through. They love what they've seen of the house online & they are cash buyers.

I did not expect the house to generate offers so quickly.  I certainly did not expect to have trouble finding one to rent!  Someone told me that perhaps God is shutting doors to everything but this house in Tennessee because He wants us there for some reason. Maybe she's right.  Once again I ask for your prayers.

I agree. I've been looking for a dear friend who needs a home desperately in northern Illinois or southern Wisconsin. they have a limited income and I can't find a thing. The few I have found have been Craigslist scams..praying for you.

Hi Shirlee,
Have you and your husband given any thought to Vermont? It is BEAUTIFUL there, has 4 glorious seasons, quite rural, but not too far from large cities, should you feel the need to be in one. The cost of living is not outrageous there, either. I grew up there and hope to one day return myself. Also, some of the finest cardiologists in the country are located in Burlington. I had Rheumatic Fever as a child, so I'm familiar with the cardiology department at FA. UVM Medical School is there and affiliated with Fletcher-Allen Hospital.
Just a thought, and something for you to ponder. Good luck in your continued search.

Sorry to hear you are having such difficulties. When we decided to move across country, we stayed at a nice apartment complex for the first year so we could look in person for a house. Our house sold in one day and I was prepared...hope things sort for you soon.

Not to create more stress, but do you guys need to rethink renting and consider buying? You know I am praying...

I've been wondering what's been going on since we last chatted...Yikes...no progress??? As for Wisconsin, I do like the Lake Geneva area, but it is more southern and so not as much snow as here (they're a good month ahead of us in growing seasons)...and it is quite pricey. Otherwise, try Janesville - nice size city, close to Madison and Milwaukee, and I would think there might me quite a few possibilities there as the GM plant recently closed down and many lost their jobs.....Just some random thoughts.... I keep telling you, Shirlee, Melbourne is the most liveable city in the world (it keeps topping the list) - in a different country and a different hemisphere but those are just little details!

Seriously, though, thinking of and praying for you.

P.S. Vermont sounds lovely.

I didn't expect your fabulous property to stay on the market long. My opinion, is Crossville, simply because you need a place in a hurry and it's familiar. Spend a year there visting other places until you find the right one. Rushing into an unknown area is too stressful with your health right now. I know you didn't ask for my opinion!! But I had a bad day and I'm wound tight!

It's great your house is generating so much interest considering the economic situation. I know some people in UK who managed to sell their house after 6 months it's been listed for sale. So, I truly hope you find the right buyer & the right location for your future new home, thinking of you x
